INTER-CAD Kft.

Inter-CAD Ltd. was founded in 1991 by six young Hungarian engineers to meet the demand of the engineering software market.
Their plan was to develop a user friendly product like the world-wide known architectural software, ArchiCAD, with a sophisticated graphical user interface for a civil engineering finite element analysis and design program. The first version appeared on the market in 1992. Axis-3D (it had been the name of the program until version 5 was released)  ran under MS-DOS and became quite popular among the engineers having a personal computer. During the last 17 years the developers always considered user's requests and took the advantage of new hardware devices and operating systems. The latest version of their product is AxisVM 9 running under Windows NT / 2000 / XP and Vista operating systems. It can exploit the benefits of dual (or multiple) core processors.AxisVM 10 was released in 2010 with long awaited
new features.

PRODUCT HISTORY

AxisVM 10 (2010)

New features helping model building and editing are stories, logical parts, cutting and detaching objects, polygonal and arced load contours. Data exchange features are enhanced (exporting SDNF, enhanced IFC processing). Smart rib eccentricity (top, bottom or midplane) automatically follows changes in cross-section or plate thickness.
New analysis and design features: dynamic analysis, timber design, pad footing design
Improved solver engine handling multiple core processors and optimizing memory access speeds up the analysis.

Complete list of new features:  New features

AxisVM 9 (2007)
Direct drawing of objects speeds up model building. This function allows drawing structural objects with  predefined properties and geometry. Both properties and geometry can be changed during drawing. A new element type is introduced. Diaphragm can simplify the model. More realistic rendering with textures (bricks, concrete, metal, stone, timber textures). Moving loads and calculation of pre-tensioned beams are also included.
A
COM interface allows external developers programming AxisVMA free AxisVM Viewer is developed to help presenting models without a full AxisVM. Enhanced model checking analyses hinges before calculation.
Solution of the system of equations made faster through teh support of multiple core processors. New design features are: Strength and bending design for any cross-section and mesh-independent reinforcement domains.

AxisVM 8 (2005)

A wizard for the Report Maker can build a report of the model based on a few user settings. The new Report Maker can update tables and drawings automatically. IFC file import and export connects AxisVM to architectural programs. Geometry information is used to build a model framework automatically creating and assigning cross-sections and adjusting element boundaries.Beams can have a variable (tapered) cross-section and can be arc-shaped. Line element meshing makes it easier to handle and evaluate structural elements while retaining the solution precision.

Number of AxisVM licences in 2007 is over 3000.

AxisVM 7 (2002)

The entire graphical user interface is rewritten to speed it up with OpenGL support and allow realtime manipulation of the model view. Reporting is enhanced with different dimensioning tools, text boxes, associative result boxes. Report Maker makes it possible to build a complete report  including tables and images. Tables are automatically updated to reflect changes in the model and results.
Solver can handle systems of equation under 16 GB. A bolted joint design module is made available. Due to demands of the foreign markets design modules according to new German DIN, Swiss SIA, Romanian STAS are implemented.
Until Version 8 was released almost 2000 licences were sold throughout Europe.

AxisVM 6 (2001)

Domains introduced a new approach in surface modeling allowing the user to draw complex planar shapes including arcs. The finite element mesh is constructed by a mesh generator. Each element can have an automatic reference which sets the default orientation of local coordinate systems. Nonlinear elements like compression-only supports, tension-only trusses are avaliable. An interface to ArchiCAD helps reading data from architects’ models. Eurocode design modules are implemented. Efficiency of steel structural elements can be calculated and displayed with another module.
After release of AxisVM 6 number of licences reached 1200.

AxisVM 5 (1999)

It is the first Windows compatible version of the program under the name AxisVM. With extensive rewriting of the existing code it was possible to build a brand new multi-windowed graphical interface with enhanced editing functions like constraints, automatic intersection, coordinate locking. This version was very successful in Romania. Agreements with several foreign distributors were a big step forward.

Axis-3D v4.0  (1997-1998)

This is the last version for the DOS environment. The new solver used the entire memory range for analysis making calculations much faster. Seismic analysis appears. Reinforcement calculations for shells and column reinforcement check is also included. An interface to XSteel and BoCad steel design programs is implemented.

Axis-3D v3.0  (1995)

In 3.0 developers adopted the technology of dialog windows but still in DOS environment. New features allowed parametric mesh refinement, a rib finite element to calculate ribbed reinforced concrete plates, influence lines. DXF export/import became a link between Axis-3D and architecture programs. A wireframe view with hidden lines was also implemented.  In 1998 a Romanian version was released. Soon the German and English version followed helping Austrian, German, Swiss and Danish engineers.

Axis-3D v2.0  (1993)

The range of finite elements expanded including membrane, plate and shell elements. Vibration analysis works for composite models as well. A material and cross-section database is also included.

Axis-3D v2.5  (1994)
This version offered reinforcement calculation for plates and membranes according to the Hungarian code and let the users build and analyse composite structures.

Axis-3D v1.0  (1991 . október)

The first version of the program required an IBM PC AT compatible system with DOS 3.1 or higher. Its unique feature was 2D or 3D editing in a perspective view. The number of nodes and truss, beam, support elements was unlimited. It handled a maximum of 60 load cases and load combinations and calculated 6 vibration shapes, offered different cross-sections, end releases, local or global supports, nodal degress of freedom. Available load types were nodal loads, support displacements, concentrated and distributed beam loads, thermal loads, tension/compression, fault in length, beam end forces.

Results were the nodal displacements, beam and truss internal forces and support reactions.
